What wildfire-resistant window options does Cascadia offer?
Cascadia offers two wildfire-resistant options within the Universal Series™: Wildfire Resistant (WFR) and Wildfire Resistant Plus (WFR Plus). Both are designed for Wildland–Urban Interface (WUI) applications and comply with California State Fire Marshal (SFM) Standard 12-7A-2 – Exterior Windows.
What is the difference between WFR and WFR Plus?
Both options meet SFM 12-7A-2 requirements. WFR Plus includes a fire-retardant additive integrated into the fiberglass frame resin, which slows ignition, reduces flame spread, and allows the frame to self-extinguish more quickly during wildfire exposure.
Are Cascadia’s wildfire-resistant windows fire-rated?
No. There is currently no “wildfire rating.” Cascadia’s WFR and WFR Plus options are wildfire-resistant, meaning they are evaluated using SFM 12-7A-2, which assesses resistance to embers, radiant heat, and flame contact. Fire-rated products are evaluated under different standards, such as ASTM E119 or UL 263, for internal building fires.
What does SFM Standard 12-7A-2 evaluate?
SFM 12-7A-2 evaluates exterior windows for resistance to ember exposure, radiant heat, flame impingement, duration to glass breakage, and ember penetration potential—the primary ignition mechanisms during a wildfire or WUI event.
Does the fire-retardant resin affect window performance?
No. The fire-retardant additive used in WFR Plus integrates into the fiberglass resin without affecting structural capacity, air-water-thermal performance, or compatibility with the full Universal Series™ platform.
Are wildfire-resistant options available across all Universal Series products?
Yes. SFM 12-7A-2 compliant wildfire-resistant options are available across the full Universal Series™ window, window wall, and door lineup, including the Lift & Slide Door.
What glazing is required for wildfire-resistant performance?
A minimum 6mm glass thickness is recommended for all lites, with the interior lite being tempered glass. Additional lites can also be tempered to meet project requirements. Low-E coatings and other glass treatments do not impact wildfire resistance.
Do wildfire-resistant windows guarantee protection during a wildfire?
No product can guarantee outcomes under all wildfire conditions. Wildfire-resistant windows improve a building’s resistance to ember and heat exposure, similar to how higher SPF sunscreen increases protection without eliminating risk entirely.
Can Cascadia support wildfire-resistant specifications?
Yes. Cascadia offers a 3-Part Wildfire-Resistant Window Specification aligned with SFM 12-7A-2 and Universal Series™ configurations, along with supporting test documentation upon request.
